Provides emotional and spiritual support to pediatric patients with severe or life-limiting illnesses, their families, and hospital staff. Assesses and addresses complex moral, spiritual, and ethical needs while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to support holistic palliative care. Participates in quality assurance initiatives and stays current with chaplaincy best practices in a hospital setting.
POSITION SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for providing emotional and spiritual support to children with severe and/or life-limiting illnesses, planned and emergent perinatal intrauterine fetal demises (IUFDs), and parents and sibling(s) anticipating or experiencing the loss of a loved one, as well as support of hospital staff and physicians. Addresses the spiritual, emotional and relational health needs of patients, their loved ones, and the hospital staff, regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity or religious preference. Exhibits empathy, interpersonal skills and analytical ability to assess spiritual needs and to provide assistance in complex moral, spiritual and ethical matters. Collaborates within an interdisciplinary team to carry out holistic palliative care treatment plans. Participates in Supportive Care Services quality assurance and improvement initiatives, as well as remains current in chaplaincy evidence-based treatment modalities. Supports and adheres to University Health (UH) policies and procedures and demonstrate behaviors consistent with UH mission, vision and values.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
A Master’s degree in Divinity, Theology or Religion or related field is required. Must have completed four units of clinical pastoral education (CPE). Endorsement by religious affiliation for chaplaincy is preferred. Three years of experience as Clinical Chaplain in hospital or hospice setting is preferred.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION
Certification as Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) by the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), NACC, NAJC, CPSP, Spiritual Care Association, or other equivalent certifying body is preferred.
